A cave pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, the cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, according to UNESCO. Located in Kandy - Jaffna Highway, Habarana, Dambulla. The Golden Temple has a large golden seat Buddha and below is a Buddhist museum. Travelers can climb the narrow stairs to the base of the Golden Buddha and find a terrace where worshipers continue to offer offerings. To the right of the Buddha are statues of brightly colored monks and elephants. The first cave is called 'Thevaraja Leena Vihara' - it is believed that the lord of the temple, Sakka (King of God) gave the final touches to the main image of this cave. The cave is named after the 45-foot-long Sleeping Buddha statue. The second cave is called 'Maharaja Leena Vihara' - the temple of the great kings. It is one of the largest and most impressive caves i
